Lake Elmo

Not unlike many with young children, the need to create a space in their home for big play and creative activities became more pressing for this family. Their desire was for a space that would be a playroom and entertainment room now (entertainment for kids or adults), a teenage hangout space later. In addition, both Kirsten and Jon are painters and wanted an art studio that allows them to paint and introduce art to their children. It needed to be easy to clean up and able to stay messy. The convenience of another bathroom was essential.

The design divides the space in two with a sliding wall and a change in floor finish - carpet tile in the playroom and tile in the art studio. The wood ceiling unifies the space with a pattern that echoes the structure above. For the children’s art a steel wall with magnets is set behind a playful and protective pipe screen. The bathroom gains natural light through turquoise translucent glass.
