Kitchen/Bath Remodel

Minneapolis, MN

An important aspect of this remodel was to be respectful of the existing 70’s prefabricated Wausau home we were working within. The remodel included creating a more efficient cook friendly kitchen after omitting an unwanted kitchen eating area as well as combining two small adjacent full and half baths into one larger bath that can be open to one another or separated by operable glass panels surrounding a shared tub/shower.

Rather than completely opening the kitchen to the adjacent dining space laser cut screens were created from the original mahogany panels salvaged from the deconstructed walls. A decorative pattern selected by the homeowners was then laser cut into the salvaged panels, creating an additional transformation of old to new. New surfaces and materials were carefully selected to both retain the natural matte 70’s palette of wood and tile while adding a bit of contrast with glossier surfaces. New gloss-white island cabinets are wrapped with a wenge wood ‘skirt’ and countertop while wall cabinets are topped with a matte corian. The kitchen floor is covered with a new glossy quartz tile. The bath remodel retains a similar material and surface attitude with the tub surround being a wenge skirt capped by a corian tub deck. Operable tempered and laminated glass panels complete the shared tub enclosure.
